We are a dynamic and innovative organization seeking the expertise of a senior mechanical engineer consultant to spearhead the design phase and construction of a state-of-the-art data center campus. Position Overview
On behalf and as an advocate for the owner you will work directly with the design and construction firms to lead the design and development of Plumbing, Process Chilled Water, Water and Wastewater, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems for the data center, ensuring optimal environmental conditions for equipment performance and energy efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- HVAC System Design: On behalf and as an advocate for the owner you will work directly with the design and construction firms to lead the design and development of Plumbing, Process Chilled Water, Water and Wastewater, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems for the data center, ensuring optimal environmental conditions for equipment performance and energy efficiency.
- Collaboration with Cross-functional Teams: Work closely with electrical engineers, architects, and project managers to integrate mechanical systems seamlessly into the overall data center design. Work with the Construction Manager to ensure all design package releases are synced to the fast-track and multi-package delivery schedule.
- Cooling Solutions: Implement advanced cooling solutions, such as liquid cooling and airflow management, to maintain optimal operating temperatures for servers and other critical equipment.
- Water and Wastewater Solutions: Design and oversee the delivery, treatment, disposal, and reclamation of Domestic Water, Sanitary and Wastewater, and Industrial Water for Water Use Efficiency (WUE)
- Code and Standards Compliance: Ensure that all mechanical designs and installations comply with relevant industry codes, standards, and regulations.
- Space Utilization: Optimize the layout of mechanical and plumbing systems to maximize space utilization within the data center while maintaining accessibility and maintainability.
- Energy Efficiency: Implement strategies to enhance the energy efficiency of mechanical systems, contributing to overall sustainability and cost-effectiveness.
- Risk Assessment: Conduct risk assessments related to mechanical systems and develop mitigation plans to ensure the reliability and resilience of the data center.
- Budget Management: Collaborate with the project management team to develop and manage budgets during design and through construction related to mechanical engineering aspects of the data center project.
- Commissioning and Testing: Oversee the commissioning and testing of mechanical systems to ensure they meet performance and reliability standards. Work with Equipment Suppliers and the CM to ensure that robust quality management processes are being utilized to reduce defects and “short-ships”.
- Equipment Quality: Manage equipment quality during engineering, supplier selection, orders, manufacturing, FWT’s, shipping, Logistics, Installation, connection, and startup and commissioning. ensure all complete documentation is maintained post-order and through delivery of documentation and training to Operations.
- Documentation: Create detailed engineering documentation, including drawings, specifications, and technical reports.
- Continuous Improvement: Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies in electrical engineering and data center design, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Travel Approximately 30%
Qualifications
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or other technical discipline
- 15+ years professional experience in mechanical systems design, construction, operations, and maintenance of Data Centers
- Hyper scale data center experience preferred
- Mechanical Professional Engineer registration preferred
- Knowledge of HVAC systems including Evaporative Systems, Chilled/Condenser Water Systems, Glycool/Glycol, Air Handling Systems (Direct Expansion, Rooftop Units, CRAC Units, etc.), Hot/Cold aisle containment, and Building Management System/Controls Automation
- Knowledge of Plumbing systems including Water Treatment, Pumping Systems and Distribution, Sanitary/Waste Systems, and Storm Drainage Systems
- Knowledge of Fire Protection/Fire Alarm systems such as Early Warning/Detection Systems, Double Interlock Pre-Action, and Wet Pipe Systems
- Knowledge of industry standards, building codes and safety standards including UMC, NFPA, ASHRAE, UBC, UMC and LEED
- Effective communication skills
- Experience in high density data center design and the ability to drive an innovative design is preferred
